The Sanctuary of Wisdom – Celebrating Libraries and Reading

“अविद्यया मृत्युं तीर्त्वा विद्यया अमृतमश्नुते।
विद्यया तु अमृतत्वं प्राप्य न विद्यया मृत्युं याति॥”

"By overcoming death through ignorance (avidya), one attains immortality through knowledge (vidya). Through knowledge, one achieves immortality; death does not come through knowledge."

This profound verse emphasises the eternal value of knowledge, the very essence preserved and propagated by libraries.

In the heart of every thriving society lies a sanctuary of wisdom—the library. More than mere buildings lined with bookshelves, libraries embody the collective knowledge and cultural heritage of humankind. They serve as gateways to the vast universe of ideas, dreams, and discoveries. The importance of cultivating a reading habit cannot be overstated; it is through reading that minds are enriched, perspectives broadened and creativity ignited. A week-long celebration, from 14th to 21st November, 2025 was orchestrated by the Literary Club - Adhyayan and Fine Arts Club - Anany across the campus, highlighting the vitality of libraries and reading.

Nationally, Library Week is celebrated in remembrance of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, the Architect of Modern Indian Libraries, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for modern library practices. The concept of a library has evolved over centuries from ancient clay tablets in Mesopotamia and papyrus scrolls to vast collections of printed books and modern digital archives, always serving as custodians of human thought and culture.

The event encompassed a spectrum of competitions designed to engage students intellectually and creatively. Poster-making contests illustrated the beauty and necessity of reading, while spirited debates tackled pressing contemporary issues such as the decline in reading habits due to social media and AI’s growing influence. Essay writing sessions invited students to ponder the future—could AI replace physical libraries? These activities sparked lively discussions and reflections, drawing enthusiastic participation from students in large numbers. In recognition of talent and dedication, prizes were awarded to competition winners, honouring their achievements. Additionally, the Library also felicitated the Best library users who exemplify the sincere and regular use of library resources, inspiring future generations to embrace the treasure trove of knowledge. The entire week was a celebration of learning, community and the timeless importance of libraries.
